Used Robot Listings: What Operating Hours and Cycle Counts Can Show

A used robot listing may include operating hours, a cycle count or a statement that a component was recently serviced. These can be useful starting points, but they do not all measure the same thing. A buyer should ask how each value was produced, which component it describes and what supporting records are available before treating it as evidence of the machine’s condition.

Identify the counter and the equipment it covers

Record the machine and controller identity, the counter name shown by the system, the date it was read and who supplied the reading. Ask whether it refers to powered-on time, a defined operating mode, a particular component or another measure. A number without its definition should remain an unverified listing detail.

Do not assume that a controller reading includes the full history of a replaced component or that the original counter was never reset. If the seller cannot establish the history, record the gap. A low number alone does not prove that a robot has been lightly loaded, stored correctly or maintained according to its manufacturer’s instructions.

Read a cycle definition in its product context

The Robotiq Hand-E instruction manual contains product-specific sections on maintenance and references to cycles. Its contents concern the gripper and version described in that document. A buyer considering another model should obtain the applicable manufacturer documentation rather than applying a figure or definition from this manual automatically.

A robot arm, a gripper and a peripheral may have different usage histories and different records. Identify which part a stated count concerns and whether the relevant manual defines the count in the same way. If the information is unavailable, ask the seller or authorised service provider; do not infer an exact remaining service life from a single counter.

Compare a maintenance statement with its evidence

For each claimed service event, ask for the date, equipment identity, work description, provider and any documentation that the parties are permitted to share. A general invoice may confirm that work was billed without establishing every task that was performed. Similarly, an internal note may be useful context but should not be represented as an independent inspection report unless it is one.

The W3C PROV Primer introduces concepts for recording the origin of information and the activities and participants associated with it. A buyer can use that idea to organise documents by source and date. The primer does not validate a seller’s statement, assess wear or determine the contractual effect of a maintenance record.

Use a hypothetical example to expose the gaps

Imagine a seller provides a controller-hours screenshot and a separate receipt for a gripper service. The screenshot may concern the controller while the receipt concerns an accessory. The buyer can record both documents and ask how each relates to the equipment offered. It would be a mistake to treat the two records as a complete and continuous history without additional evidence.

This example does not describe an actual robot or imply that either document is unreliable. Its purpose is to show which questions remain: what the counter measures, whether components changed, which service was performed and whether the available documentation covers the relevant period.

Protect records and arrange a suitable inspection

Usage logs and maintenance files can contain customer names, production details, account information or network identifiers. Agree on what may be shared and how sensitive content will be handled. A redacted record should be identified as redacted; the buyer can then decide what further information is necessary and appropriate to request.

Physical inspection, powering equipment and any motion test must be arranged under the relevant manufacturer instructions, site procedures and qualified supervision. A marketplace checklist cannot establish a machine’s safety or guarantee its future operation. If a seller’s claim is material to the purchase, the parties should define how it will be assessed and documented.

Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence

A useful comparison lists each claim, its source, the equipment it covers, its date and any unresolved question. For example, “seller supplied a screenshot of this counter” is more precise than “the robot has a verified remaining life.” Follow up on missing documents without silently converting an unknown value into zero. If the equipment is later inspected, link the inspection report to the same identity and retain the date and scope of that separate check.

The site’s article on demonstration software and transferable assets covers a separate due-diligence issue. The industry information section provides additional context. Actual purchase, inspection and contractual decisions require the parties’ own evidence and appropriate professional judgment.
